WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create your own website or blog. On a slightly more technical level, WordPress is an open-source content management system(CMS) licensed under GPLv2, which means that anyone  can use or modify the WordPress software for free.

It was originally created as a tool to publish blogs but has evolved to support publishing other web content, including more traditional websites, mailing lists and Internet forum, media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems and online stores.
