Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. To the north of the city is a large artificial lake, called Anasagar, adorned with a marble structure called Baradari. Ajmer is an ancient crowded city with modern developments in the outskirts. Ajmer is an oasis wrapped in the green hills. Today, Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage centre for the Hindus as well as Muslims. Especially famous is the Dargah Sharif-Tomb of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, which is equally revered by the Hindus & Muslims.

Pushkar is a town in the Ajmer district. It is situated 11 km from Ajmer . It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The most famous among all is the ‘Brahma Temple’.PTAVery few temples of Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world. Other temples of Brahma, include Bithoor in UP, Khedbrahma in Gujarat, village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district; Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Srirangam, Tamil Nadu and ‘Mother Temple of Besakih in Bali’, Prambanan in Yogyakarta are in ‘Indonesia’. According to Indian mythology, after visiting all the Hindu pilgrim towns and temples (Four Dhams), if Pushkar is not visited for worship, then salvation is not achieved. Pushkar fair continues for 5 days (October/ November) and these 5 days are a period of relaxation and merry-making for the villagers. This fair time is the most busy time for them, as this is one of the largest cattle fairs in the country.

ASDargah Shariff of Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti is indeed an ornament to the city of Ajmer. One of the Muslim shrines in India, it attracts, millions of pilgrims from across India and the world. The shrine attracts lakhs of pilgrims during the Urs, commencing the death anniversary of the Saint, held from the 1st to the 6th day of the Islamic month of Rajab. A colorful fair which springs up during this time is a major attraction. Outside the Dargah is a crowded bazaar. It is filled with ritual offerings made at the Dargah like shimmering coverlets for the grave, incense, sweetmeats, rose petals and attar-a strong perfume. The dargah (shrine) of Chisti , which is visited by Muslim pilgrims as well as Hindus, Sikhs and ravidassias as a symbol of inter-communal harmony. The Dargah includes many other attractive buildings, tombs, courtyards and Daalaans, some of which are exquisite specimens of the Moghul architecture.

AMuseumThe Government Museum is situated inside the Akbar’s fort in Ajmer, also known as Magazine. The museum primarily consist of Sculptures, inscriptions, pre-historic section, miniature paintings, arms and armor and objects of art and crafts. The museum remains open daily from 10.00 A.M. to 4.30P.M. Museum remain closed on public holidays. Besides, some interesting Jain figures are also displayed in a separate gallery. Sculptures constitute the most interesting section in the museum. Today it houses a rich collection of Mughal and Rajput armoury. Some of the fine and delicate sculptures of the region have been displayed here. The building itself has been constructed of red sandstone, which have been laid down in a square pattern giving it a fabulous look.

PushkarPushkar is a sacred town for the Hindus. Pushkar. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus.) It is often called “Tirth Raj” (king of pilgrimage sites) and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists. Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principal temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. Pushkar fair continues for 5 days (October/ November) and these 5 days are a period of relaxation and merry-making for the villagers.

ShedAdhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra Ajmer is a superb example of Indo-Islamic architecture. It is believed that it was constructed in two and a half days, hence called as Adhai-Din (two and a half days). It is also believed that the name is associated to a 2 and a 1/2 day fair held annually nearby. Enter through the north gateway and see the ruin of a minaret in the right side. A staircase will take you to a tower from where the muezzin called the faithful. Yellow limestone arches mark the front side of façade. The walls of the main hall are chiseled into small screens to allow sunlight to enter. The core of the Jhonpra looks like a Hindu temple than that of a mosque, with a main hall prop up by splendid columns. Three pillars are positioned over in such a way that the shrine looks more elevated than the actual height. With its exquisitely carved ceilings, exceptionally designed columns, this marvelous structure catches the attention of any tourist.

ASLAna Sagar Lake is an artificial lake. It is was built by Anaji Chauhan, the grandfather of Prithvi Raj Chauhan. The lake is spread over 13 Kilometers. There is a Circuit house on a hill near the lake that used to be British Residency. There is an island in the center of the lake which is accessible by boat or water scooter. Boats and water scooters could be hired from the east side of the Dault Bagh. This is one of the beautiful lake in India but it gets dry every summar. This Lake is surrounded by many other attractions like the temple of ‘Khobra Behroon’. The lake is an artificial creation that has been a lifeline for the people of Ajmer in the past. The lake still serves as a lifeline of beauty to the city to the locals and the visitors as well.
